COURSE DESCRIPTION

Global Health and Human Rights will focus on defining the basic concepts of human rights and their links to global health. It will explore the main issues of global health; the human rights instruments and tools of prime importance to health; the impact of globalization on the health of population; health and human rights challenges UN agencies are confronted with; as well as several public health issues where global health and human rights collide (violence against women, torture, discrimination against people living with a handicap, etc.); health policy fostering non-discrimination of patients and specific vulnerable groups. The course will also include visits to or teaching by professionals from WHO (World Health Organization), UN-OHCHR (United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights), IOM (International Organization for Migration), ICRC (International Committee of the Red Cross), among other organizations.

Learning Objectives

By the end of the course the students should be able to:

  • Define the basic concepts of human rights and its links to global health
  • List the main issues of global health
  • List the human rights instruments and tools of prime importance to health

By the end of the course, should be familiar with:

  • The impact of globalization on the health of populations
    • Health and human rights challenges UN Agencies are confronted with
    • Several public health issues where global health and human rights collide (e.g. violence against women, torture, discrimination against people living with a handicap, etc)
    • Health policy fostering non discrimination of patients and specific vulnerable groups

By the end of the training module the students should be able to

  • Integrate Global Health and Human Rights issues into professional practice
  • Lobby in favour of basic respect of human rights in the field of public and community health

 

Validation

The Summer School will be validated through attendance, participation, group work and presentations

After completion of the course, participants will receive a Certificate of Completion from the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Geneva.

Credits: 6 ECTS (European Credits Transfer)

The programme is organized in 3 different thematic weeks which include lectures and group work with a specific focus on a key priorities of global health and human rights.

UN agencies and top experts in health and human rights will be presenting different aspects of global health, of human rights and of policy issues:

In preparation to those 3 weeks you are invited to read the articles and consult the websites listed in the following pages which will enhance your learning curve by facilitating your assimilation of concepts and information during lectures but which will also benefit the group work of the week.

A Syllabus and obligatory / recommended readings will be distributed to the enrolled students.
