Course description
COURSE DESCRIPTION
After a first successful edition in 2015, the University of Geneva organises its second Summer School on State and Society in Contemporary Africa.
This 10-days summer school, taught in English, takes advantage of Geneva's unique international setting to offer a mix of academic teaching and workshops with International Organizations and NGOs active on the continent.
The course is organised around four modules. The first module provides an introduction to the study of the State in Africa and gives a general overview of current academic debates. Modules 2-4 look at several dimensions of state-society relations on the continent from three different vantage points.
Module 1: Introducing the history and historiography of the State in Africa
Module 2: Economic Growth, Development and Social Inequalities
Module 3: Natural Resources, the Environment and Conflict
Module 4: Health and Demography
Evaluation:
Participants are evaluated based on a group presentation on the last days of the two-weeks summer school (equivalence of 4 ECTS). Students wanting to acquire 6 ECTS have the opportunity to do so on the basis of a satisfactory take-home paper, to be written within a month after the end of the summer school.
Please note: Changes to the draft program may be made at any time prior to the start of the course.
